The Chihuahua may be the world's smallest dog, but they have one of the biggest hearts. Known for their loyalty, intelligence, and affectionate nature, Chihuahuas form deep bonds with their families and are devoted companions for many years.

Temperament

• With proper care, many Chihuahuas live 15–20 years, and some even reach their early twenties.

Types of Chihuahuas

Chihuahuas come in two recognized coat varieties:

• Smooth Coat
• Long Coat

They are also commonly described by head shape:

• Apple Head (the breed standard recognized by kennel clubs)
• Deer Head (a common variation with a longer muzzle and larger build)

Health

Responsible breeding starts with healthy parents. Before breeding, every Chihuahua should undergo appropriate health screening.

Recommended health testing includes:

• OFA (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals) health testing, beginning at approximately 1 year of age, depending on the specific test.
• DNA testing to screen for inherited genetic conditions and help breeders make informed breeding decisions.
• Patella (knee) evaluations.
• Cardiac (heart) examinations.
• Eye examinations when recommended.
• Hypoglycemia (Low Blood Sugar)

One health concern, particularly in very small Chihuahua puppies and adults, is hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). Symptoms may include weakness, lethargy, trembling, confusion, poor coordination, or seizures if untreated. Young puppies should eat regularly and owners should learn to recognize the early warning signs so prompt treatment can be given if needed.
